What Vicki Did Next..

It’s already 5 months since I returned from my ‘Trip of Lifetime’. I have not been completely idle in the interim but I can confess that, almost from the moment I landed in Heathrow to a fairytale snowscape on Christmas Eve, I have been planning my next ‘Great Escape’.
Don’t get me wrong. I love my home, my fantastic supportive family and lovely friends (I only have lovely friends, otherwise what’s the point!),  and it’s not like I haven’t had plenty to occupy me since I got home, but after a few days back in the routine I get itchy feet.  I do realise that I cannot continue to spend money without earning it but I am not anxious to return to corporate life and so take some time to focus on new career alternatives and avail myself of the external support my previous employers have been kind enough to provide. I am a gypsy at heart.  Consequently, I have spent time visiting family and friends who live that bit further away and who I didn’t have time to visit when I was working. I have even ventured to North America for a month, to do a little sales & marketing consultancy for a longstanding university friend in the aviation business. That was a great experience and learning about a new industry was fun and exciting, if a little daunting, in the time scale. I returned home certain in the knowledge that it is a direction I would much prefer to pursue, rather than a regular 9 to 5.

In April, I celebrated a BIG BIRTHDAY but age is only a number and round numbers are worth celebrating. So I did, for a whole weekend and beyond.
I have more visits scheduled, to Ireland and Spain and many more I have promised to visit but still not scheduled. Still, it’s not enough. I miss the buzz of the unknown. My itchy feet demand adventure, new experiences, and even a little hardship to encourage me to appreciate what I have waiting at home.

Africa is calling and I cannot ignore her any longer..

I’m ready for a few days R&R in Jinja and our first day starts well with some gorgeous fresh chapattis. Then it’s off to explore in town. I love the markets with their dark alleys between the stalls and all the fresh fruit and veg, some of which I can even recognise. Haggling over every small purchase is a highlight and after some tough negotiations I end up with a baseball cap and a proposal of marriage for the princely sum of 75p (actually the marriage proposal was a bonus I hadn’t counted on!).

Alice is sooo excited to get her nails painted for 50p, and we spend the rest of the morning admiring them before catching a boda-boda back to the camp. For those of you not in the know, a boda boda is a motorbike taxi and is a near death experience not to be missed. Flying down the dirt road without a helmet, swerving round potholes, people and oncoming traffic is exhilarating enough, but then the icing on the cake is the high speed acceleration down a very steep hill in order to gain enough momentum to get up the other side to reach our camp site. Arriving there alive is the cherry on top.

It’s Chelle’s birthday today and most of us have signed up for the booze cruise down the Nile to Lake Victoria. I am not certain what to expect but the sunset views are spectacular as we slowly meander along the Nile into the Lake, especially from the open toilet at the back of the boat!

Back at the campsite the celebrations continue in the bar until gradually everyone’s drifts off (not necessarily to their own tent!) and there are only a few of us left as the bar closes and we settle round a campfire with the bar staff to exchange storie

Hello Vicki
Great blog so far, it's not until you write about your adventures that I realise these trips suit your personality so much, sounds great fun. It always seems to report daily life as so insignificant compared to what you're up to! We enjoyed our much needed holiday and appreciated the house which is now as fully furnished as it's going to get otherwise we'll need an extension! Cathy Kenny and Chloe loved it too. We had a lovely week with them and then enjoyed a week to ourselves. Back to work with the usual pressures but feeling that well we are so lucky with our lot. I feel I have riden the dread of going back to France with the previous traumas and feel so much different now to before I went. Harry got back from South Africa yesterday and has had the time of his life. Experiencing various foods like yourself and reporting how amazing it all was. We had a lovely dinner and he had 3 lots of pudding and said how good it was to be back home. I expect apart from feeding time he'll be catching up with his friends for the next 2 weeks. Well it's Friday 7 am and I'm off for my swim. Speak soon much love and hugs x x

    What Vicki Did..

After 25 years of corporate travel in international sales and marketing, Vicki decided to chuck in her job and swapped 5 star hotels for budget hostels, tents and  a sleeping bag as she travelled the world. She's never had so much fun.
