Those of us who tracked the previous day enjoy the comforts of a cooked breakfast sat a table with chairs with backs, instead of the usual camping stools with plates perched on our laps. Then it’s a quick dash to the border and on to Ruhengeri to catch up with the rest of the gang. The border road is brand new smooth tarmac. Another indication of the investment in trading links between Rwanda and Uganda. The countryside is lush and beautiful and almost immediately it seems that Rwanda has had more organisation and structure than we have seen in Uganda. Villages seem less haphazard, people are better dressed, crop fields are structured and there are power lines everywhere.
Arriving in Ruhengeri another rare treat awaits us. Tonight we will again be in proper beds for the night, albeit in large dorms. My heart sinks though when I realise that there are only top bunks left and I will have to clamber up with my knee still in stitches and now inflamed after the hard day’s trekking.
Before tackling that hurdle though there are some more surprises in store. There are 3 new people joining our group. Kim and Zoe are American nurses working in Saudi Arabia and Emma is heading home to Melbourne from the UK via our trip to Cape Town. Jenny will also join us for a short way.
It’s also Sally’s birthday today and, as usual, we struggle to find a celebration cake and only manage to secure one little cupcake for her. Birthday cards have also been a struggle and so we have now resorted to the most inappropriate love poems which provide great amusement as we all sign. We have already had 4 birthdays on this trip which seems to have more than its fair share of Leos and Aries characters.
The birthday celebrations continue in the bar until the early hours.
